From Lab Relocation to Commissioning — Expertise that Delivers

Vision meets execution when the right expertise steps in. Bothwell Engineering helped a growing life sciences company turn a complex lab relocation into a seamless success.

A mid-sized, publicly traded life sciences company, known for its advanced diagnostics and targeted therapeutics, was expanding its global research and development efforts while maintaining an active commercial portfolio. When it came time to build and relocate a new R&D laboratory, leadership realized internal teams—already juggling heavy workloads—needed additional support. The project demanded strict compliance and tight timelines, leaving little room for error. That’s when Bothwell Engineering’s life science consultants stepped in, providing the project management and technical expertise necessary to keep everything moving forward seamlessly.

How Bothwell Engineering ensures complex lab relocations and R&D initiatives are executed with precision, compliance, and seamless coordination

The client already had vision and plans, but execution required bandwidth and specialized expertise. A group of Bothwell consultants on site with varied expertise and skill sets were able to triage to growing scope of needs blending project management and commissioning expertise that ensured compliance and operational readiness.

Here are five ways in which we’ve managed vendor relationships with great success—that can be applied to your next project:

  1. Engage Early – Involve vendors during building design and utility planning to ensure equipment fits and functions properly.
  2. Provide Clear Requirements – Share detailed specs, SOPs, and regulatory needs so commissioning aligns with GMP standards.
  3. Collaborate on Commissioning – Develop a joint plan for inspections, calibration, and utility integration. In many instances, we handle the commissioning of equipment; however, in this case, our focus was on vendor management. It is critical to clearly define responsibilities so everyone knows who is doing what. Strong vendor relationships and clear communication are essential to ensure accountability and avoid overlap in roles and responsibilities.
  4. Invest in Training – Have vendors train your team on operation, maintenance, and GMP compliance.
  5. Monitor and Improve – Conduct validation testing, document issues, and implement corrective actions with vendor support.

This blog was created with the support of Dan Gabrault, Chemical Engineer and Project Manager at Bothwell Engineering, who loves fixing equipment, cultivating strong vendor relationships, and taking on his next home remodel project on the weekends.
